Anemia ICD 10 code | Anemia in Chronic Disease (2024)

Anemia of inflammation, also called anemia of chronic disease or ACD. This  is a type of anemia that affects people who have conditions that cause inflammation like  infections, autoimmune diseases, cancer, etc.

Anemia is a type of blood disorder that is usually caused by a lack of blood. In fact, red blood cells are reduced below normal levels or the amount of hemoglobin in each red blood cell is less than normal. Anemia is seen mostly in women. Due to the lack of hemoglobin (which is a protein) in anemia, there is no equal supply of oxygen to the tissues of the body. Anemia icd 10 code is D64.9, other adjacent diagnosis codes are also updated in below table.

Anemia is a condition in which blood has lower red blood cells than normal conditions. Red blood cells may also have lower hemoglobin than normal counts and Hemoglobin is the iron-rich protein that allows red blood cells to carry oxygen from lungs to the rest of the body. Due to less red blood cells hemoglobin of the body may not get enough oxygen.

Anemia of inflammation is also called Anemia of chronic disease because this type of anemia commonly occurs in people who have chronic conditions.

Anemia of chronic disease which is also known as the inflammation anemia is a condition which can be linked to a range of diseases, which include chronic diseases like cancer, certain infections as well as autoimmune and inflammatory disorders like rheumatoid or Lupus. Anemia is characterised by the low level of circulating hemoglobin or red blood cells which is the component that makes up red blood cells that carry oxygen. Anemia associated with chronic illness is typically mild or moderate. In the case of mild cases, anemia might not be associated with symptoms, but it can cause fatigue, pallor on the complexion (pallor) and feeling lightheaded. The mechanisms behind anemia associated with chronic illness are complex and are not completely comprehended.

The precise cause of chronic disease can differ. Most often, multiple processes occur simultaneously. Anemia may be caused by a slight decrease of the normal survival of red blood cells. Furthermore it is possible that the red blood cell production (erythropoiesis) or the hormone erythropoietin (a hormone that increases the production of red blood cells) can be impaired. Red blood cells supply oxygen into the bloodstream. The cause of chronic illness may be contingent on the underlying cause. For instance, cancer cells could release substances which damage or destroy mature blood vessels. In certain instances cancer cells or an infectious disease can invade the bone marrow, which is the soft, spongy tissue located in the long bones where blood cells form.

Anemia of Inflammation Symptoms:
