The gallbladder is a tiny pear-shaped organ which is used to store and concentrate bile (greenish-yellow liquid) to digest fats. Bile is a substance made up predominantly of cholesterol, bile salts , and bilirubin which is produced by the liver. It is stored in the gallbladder when it is not in use. After food is consumed, it is digested in a small amount by the stomach before entering the small intestine. Here, the bile is released from the gallbladder in order to assist in the breaking down of fats.
Gallstones form when the constituents of bile, like cholesterol and bilirubin, stay within the gallbladder and begin to become solid into “pebble-like” substance. Gallstones can clog the bile ducts and hinder the release of bile and cause the formation of a backup. Around 90% of gallstones do not trigger symptoms, however obstructions in the bile ducts could result in gallbladder swelling (distension) and intense tenderness and pain on the right abdomen or the back (biliary colic). If the obstruction is persistent and causes inflammation, infection, or even a lack of blood flow (ischemia) which is a frequent condition called acute cholecystitis which is also known as acute calculous (ACC). Acute episodes of mild cholecystitis can lead to chronic cholecystitis. It causes swelling and thickening of the gallbladder’s walls, which results in the inability to store the bile.
Symptoms of cholecystitis:
The symptoms of cholecystitis is a sudden acute pain in the upper right-hand side of your abdomen or stomach and this pain spreads towards your right shoulder as well.
