Ulcerative Colitis usually starts in the rectum which is close to the anus of the human body (the place where poop leaves the body). Sometimes the inflammation spreads and affects a portion of, or the entire colon. If inflammation occurs in the rectum and lower part of the colon it is known as Ulcerative Proctitis. If the complete large intestine is affected by inflammation it is called pancolitis. If only the left side of the colon is affected by inflammation it is known as limited or distal colitis.
